Bashy 60 Second Interview - Metro
Bashy's rallying call for volunteers
Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Grime artist Bashy (aka Ashley Thomas), 24, sampled Noel Clarke's film Kidulthood then wrote the theme tune for the sequel, Adulthood. He's an ambassador for Vinspired, which encourages young people to help their community. His debut LP, Catch Me If You Can, is out now.

What does your mother call you?
Originally everyone in my family called me Ash-Bash. I just cut the Ash, now it’s Bashy. My family background is Jamaican and Dominican and over there Bashy means great, so I kept it.

What’s the best thing about West Indian culture?
It’s got to be the food. Rice and peas, swordfish, curried goat, jerk chicken and jerk fish. Mum always has something special on the menu.

What is the Vinspired scheme all about?
Young people aim to complete 50 hours of voluntary work over 12 months and blog about their experiences online. They get awarded a Vfifty certificate, which goes on their CV and is recognised by the business world. The scheme has £35million of industry backing and aims to help youngsters do something worthwhile for their community. It really is a great opportunity.

Why did you get involved?
I was asked to become an ambassador for the initiative and it’s my way of giving something back. I hope my advice can help young people steer clear of some of the mistakes I made. I’m taking MC masterclasses, too: it’s about getting young people to express themselves and improve their confidence. I hope it inspires them to identify what they want from life.

You’ve been rapping for 11 years, how did you start?
In the school playground taking on the older kids with rhymes. Most people played football but you got too sweaty so I always preferred to MC.

Who inspired you when you were growing up?
My role models aren’t famous, just people who support their family. My dad was my hero; I was convinced he could do anything. I had a strict upbringing but it meant I got brought up the right way and now I know that’s how I want to bring up my kids.
Attending The Brit School For Performing Arts doesn’t seem like the normal route for a grime artist. Ha, no I guess not. But I went there to become an actor and it was the best education I’ve had. All the students have similar interests and the teachers constantly drive you to make something of yourself.

Is acting something you want to pursue?
I have a passion for acting and music and it’s a combination that seems to be opening doors for me. Adulthood was a standout moment: to be the film’s assistant music supervisor was incredible.

Tell us about the new album
It’s my debut. Anything before was just mix-tapes and you can’t be considered a proper recording artist until you have an album under your belt. I’m nervous and excited about it because it’s uncharted territory.

Have you been lucky or is it just hard work?
I have been working my ass off for ages. The Brit School gave me a good foundation but I was a postman for a year and I only gave up being a bus driver last year. There have been no hand-outs.

Were you ever tempted to go on Britain’s Got Talent?
I’m not sure how the audience would have taken me but Simon Cowell seems to like real music and I make real music.

Is music a way out for young black people now, like boxing used to be?
There are so many more opportunities out there now for black people, we just need to take them. It’s not like 40 years ago when my mum and dad were growing up. In saying that, there are always going to be people who fall through the cracks.

What’s next?
I want to build on my acting career while pushing out more albums. I also have a clothing company called Bish Bash Bosh. Brand Bashy is coming – watch out! www.vinspired.com
